Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow. Practical Falls Prevention

Every Monday in October 2021, 2:00-3:00pm

October 4: Boost Your Balance:  Reduced muscle strength and loss of balance commonly lead to falls. Join us to learn some strength and balance exercises that can help reduce your risk for falls, along with local examples of fitness programs and the Stepping On program.

Presenters: Cindy Koehler, Physical Therapist from Marshfield Clinic-Merrill Clinic and Kate Giblin,  Senior Center Manager from the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Portage County.

October 11: Simplify Your Safety: Learn about assistive technology resources that are available in our community such as mobility devices, personal care aids, etc. and how these devices can assist to prevent falls. Find out the basics of home safety and ways to make your living environment safer to prevent falls.

Presenter: Alex Lena, Independent Living Consultant from Midstate Independent Living Choices.

October 18: Winter Mobility: Walking, driving, or shoveling: Simple tips to stay safe and prevent injuries in the land of ice and snow. Learn about things to look for when selecting and using footwear and/or assistive devices to help get around safely in winter.

Presenters: Amy Kloehn, Physical Therapist, Aspirus Health-Rhinelander Clinic and Amanda Tabin, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, Aspirus Health-Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

October 25: Being Mindful about Medications: Being on multiple medications including over the counter products and supplements can put you at greater risk of falling. Find out what to be aware of and how to manage your medications, learn about the importance of Vitamin D and Calcium and ways to sleep better without taking sleeping medications.

Presenter: Heidi Stolt, RPh, Pharmacist.

Stepping On –

This interactive, group program is for adults 60 and older who have fallen or have a fear of falling. Hear from local guest experts, trained leaders, and other group members on ways to reduce your fall risk, while increasing self-confidence. Program participants must live independently in their home or apartment and be able to walk and exercise safely on their own. Meets one time a week for seven weeks for 2 hours.

Tuesdays, September 21-November 2,  9:30am-11:30am

Marshfield – Second Street Community Center, 211 E Second Street

Tuesdays, September 28-November 9, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Virtual – Must have access to internet, laptop/tablet with camera and microphone

Thursdays, October 21-December 9 (no class November 25), 1:00pm-3:00pm

Cost:  FREE; Suggested contribution of $10 for entire 7-week program
